Do not call me “man”, “dude” or “bro”.

I realize that a lot of people have come to think of them as non-gendered colloquialisms, but they are still obviously rooted in maleness, and thus I don’t want them attributed to me.

Please and thank you.

Or mate or lad or any other designator that has a history of association with men.

Mate? The rest are gendered terms that we, society, often use non-genderedly, but mate just means friend… It’s a slightly boyish term, but in the same way that tomboys are boyish.

Obviously, I wouldn’t use any term that someone doesn’t want used for them, I’m just a bit baffled.

As a femme, I get pretty insulted when people use ‘blokey’ terms to refer to me.

Huh. I didn’t realise ‘blokey’ (as you call them) terms would be offensive to femme people. I guess as a not-very-femme person who hangs out with mostly also-not-very-femme people, I just use words like mate and think of my friends as mates.

Are there any femme/universal equivalents?

What’s wrong with just not using these words?

Personally I prefer the more feminine equivalents: love, hun, etc.

What do you mean, not using them? I’m saying, are there any words I could use instead for everyone, or maybe just instead for any femme friends. As in, I’m going to avoid using them for non-boyish/masculine people.

I really can’t imagine myself calling someone love or hon’ XD I use mate in sentences like “Your round, mate.” and “Ah, mate, can you lend me 50p?” and if that might make people uncomfortable, I’d use another word. Maybe not love/hon’ type words, though, they make me think of patronising aunts, creepy lorry drivers, and whichever accent it is that people say “Alright my lover” in.

‘Your round.’

‘Can you lend me 50p?’

‘Are you alright?’

It’s not that difficult to omit the surplus words and prevents pissing people off.

That can be impersonal. But I guess if I’ll have to do that for femme friends. You probably wouldn’t like to be in a group of friends refered to as “you fuckers” though. Things like that do depend a lot on group dynamic.
